Jamsil is home to Lotte World amusement park, the beautiful Seokchon Lake, and Olympic Park. When most travelers think of Seoul, places like Gangnam, Myeongdong, or Hongdae probably come to mind. But what if I told you there’s a neighborhood that combines rich history, modern attractions, peaceful nature, and a true taste of local Korean life—all without the overwhelming crowds? Welcome to Songpa-gu, my home and one of Seoul’s most underrated districts.
📍 Where Is Songpa-gu?
Located in the southeastern corner of Seoul, Songpa-gu (송파구) borders the Han River to the north and is nestled right next to the famous Gangnam District. It’s incredibly well-connected by subway (Lines 2, 5, 8, and 9), making it an easy destination for both tourists and locals. Yet, despite its accessibility, Songpa remains a peaceful haven compared to Seoul’s busier hotspots.
🏞️ Nature Lovers’ Paradise
One of the most defining features of Songpa-gu is its abundance of green spaces. Whether you’re a morning jogger, a picnic lover, or just need a peaceful walk, you’ll find plenty to love.
1. Seok-chon Lake (석촌호수)
This twin-lake park is famous for cherry blossoms in spring and romantic night strolls all year round. Locals come here to jog, walk their dogs, or enjoy a cup of coffee with a view. Every April, the Cherry Blossom Festival transforms this area into a dreamy pink wonderland.
2. Olympic Park (올림픽공원)
Built for the 1988 Summer Olympics, this massive park combines sports facilities, scenic walking trails, and public art installations. It’s a perfect blend of culture and nature—and don’t forget the Instagram-worthy Lone Tree, a favorite photo spot!
🏯 A District with Deep History
Though often overlooked, Songpa has some of the most significant historical sites in Seoul.
3. Mong-chon-to-seong Fortress (몽촌토성)
Located inside Olympic Park, this ancient earthen fortress dates back to the Baekje Kingdom. It’s a peaceful spot where you can walk among grassy mounds that whisper stories of Korea’s ancient past.
4. Han-seong Baek-je Museum (한성백제박물관)
Curious about Korea before the Joseon Dynasty? This museum showcases artifacts and history from the Baekje era, offering insights into one of the three ancient kingdoms of Korea. Bonus: admission is free!
🛍️ Modern Fun Meets Local Life
5. Lotte World & Lotte World Tower
Songpa is home to the iconic Lotte World, one of the world’s largest indoor theme parks. Whether you’re traveling with kids or just young at heart, this place is a blast. Right next door is the Lotte World Tower, Korea’s tallest building, with an observation deck that gives you a breathtaking view of Seoul from 123 floors up.
6. Local Markets and Cafés
Don’t miss Ga-rak Market (가락시장), one of Seoul’s largest traditional markets. You’ll find everything from fresh seafood to Korean snacks, all at great prices. Meanwhile, cozy independent cafés are scattered across Songpa, perfect for a quiet afternoon break.
